“Foundational landscape elements remain on homeowners’ wish lists, but modern updates and technology are now a top priority. With a wave of design and technical innovations, our members report that ornate hardscaping, contemporary features, lush gardens, and smart irrigation are all trending and will influence landscape designs across the country in 2020,” says Britt Wood, CEO, National Association of Landscape Professionals.
5 Landscape Trends
Ornate, Geometric Hardscaping
Hardscaping refers to the non-living elements of landscaping, such as a wood patio, a stone wall, or paver walkway. Professionals are predicting an uptick in hardscape features, including walkways, waterfall features, retainer walls, and fire pits.

Vegetable Gardens
The Farm-to-Table phenomenon has increased the number of homeowner requests for fruit and vegetable gardens. This is expected to continue into the new decade, with options such as container gardens for small spaces, or herb plants for those without a private yard.
Shades of Blue
Experts in the home decor and paint industry predict the color blue to outshine the others this year. We could see a variety of shades of blue also incorporated outside, with water features, planters, and even blue-hued flowers such as blue fortune, delphinium, hydrangea, globe thistle or grape hyacinth.

Contemporary Design
Almost every generation has adapted to the “hip” trend of simple, contemporary design. This includes landscaping as well! Simple outdoor furniture, modern outdoor kitchens, crisp grass lines, and even simple pool designs are expected to dominate the new year.
High-Tech Irrigation
Technology has entered the world of landscaping. And it’s a good thing for both your monthly water bill and the environment! Smart-irrigation systems with blue-tooth remotes help to reduce the time spent over-watering your lawn and garden.
